Can You Ship This? Batteries, Regulated Goods and the Papers Each Category Needs
Short answer: most products ship; a minority need a document chain, and the chain decides who can sign what. An answer of yes from us is always attached to a named lane, because the same item moves on one channel and is refused on the next one.
Three buckets, decided differently
Open categories need correct paperwork and nothing else. Restricted categories — built-in cells, magnetised freight, liquids, powders, cosmetics, food-contact goods, children's items — need a test or certificate trail before a channel will accept them. Prohibited categories are simply refused: goods a destination bars outright, or items a specific parcel line excludes on insurance grounds. On current US-bound parcel terms, for example, FDA-regulated articles, cosmetics and adult products are outside what the lane will carry, whatever paperwork the seller holds — a distinction worth hearing before you spend money on registrations rather than after.
Who signs which paper
This is the part most often blurred in a quote, so we set out our own line. Where we do the work, we say we do it. Where the signature legally belongs to somebody else, we do not let it read as ours.
| Paper | Whose signature | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Dangerous goods declaration | Filed by us, as the shipper's authorised agent | Classify from the datasheet, draft, check against the packing instruction and waybill, lodge the file |
| UN 38.3 test summary | Cell or battery manufacturer | Collect, verify currency, present with the consignment |
| Safety data sheet | Substance supplier | Check it matches the item actually shipped |
| Transport condition assessment | Authorised issuing house | Chase, receive, attach |
| ISPM-15 timber treatment and mark | Accredited treatment facility | Specify compliant material, verify at receiving |
| US FDA registrations and listings | You, or your registered agent | Receive what you hold, verify, present — we cannot obtain them for you |
| CE marking and declaration of conformity | The party placing goods on the EU market | Verify the mark and file exist before despatch |
| Children's product certificate, and the eFiling that carries it | Importer or their filing agent | Supply the shipment data the entry needs; a US-bound entry that requires a certificate needs it on file at the time of entry |
What a capable lane looks like for a battery product
- The cell chemistry and packaging state are known before the quote, not discovered at booking.
- Labels and marks on each unit match the declared classification.
- A booking window is chosen where the paperwork can be checked in China, not in transit.
- The destination's own rules are read: a consignment may be accepted by the carrier and still need a domestic registration to be sold.
- A fallback channel exists before the first shipment, because restricted cargo is where single-lane dependence shows up.
Any first shipment of a restricted item is subject to channel confirmation on that specific cargo, even when we have moved a superficially similar product before. The confirmation is quick, and its absence is expensive.
One more thread runs through all of this: a regulated shipment is usually also a higher-value shipment, and if it is lost the recovery follows the paperwork rather than the retail price. Compensation is based on the declared value entered at customs, so the value field and the category question should be settled in the same conversation, not two.
Category questions that arrive by WhatsApp
I have FDA paperwork, does that make my goods shippable?
Not by itself. Holding filings is a good sign for the clearance conversation, but if the channel itself bars regulated articles, the answer stays no. The useful question to us is what the goods are, what they do, and which state you want to sell into — then we look for a route that can take them.
My product contains a magnet. Is that a problem?
It is a handling question rather than a ban. Magnetic cargo needs its flux measured and a declared state for the air leg, and not every line will accept it. Confirming this at sample stage, before a container is built, is the difference between a routing choice and an inspection delay.
Can you ship food or supplement products?
Semi-sensitive categories are answered against a named channel and the destination's own rules. We do not offer a general yes on those, and we do not publish a timing or a reference figure for them until the lane is confirmed.
What if my product has no CE mark?
Then it is not ready for the EU market, and no shipping arrangement changes that. Getting the mark settled is a supplier conversation; getting a parcel moved is ours, and the order of the two matters.
The paperwork trail, item by item
Cell chemistry generates the largest stack, so start with the six documents a battery shipment needs and then read what actually makes a lane capable of carrying one — capability is a channel property, not a warehouse one, and it is confirmed lane by lane rather than assumed. Anything bound for the United States is also subject to the entry rules published by U.S. Customs and Border Protection for e-commerce imports, which is where a certificate requirement is usually set.
