Amazon Stopped Its Own Prep Service: What Changed on January 1, 2026
For years, sellers could send unlabeled, unbagged inventory directly to Amazon and pay the platform to handle prep and labeling at fulfillment centers. That option ended on January 1, 2026. Amazon no longer offers in-house prep and labeling services for FBA inventory. Every unit arriving at an Amazon fulfillment center must now be fully prepped, labeled and packaged to specification before receipt.
This change affects sellers at every scale. Small sellers who relied on Amazon's convenience pricing face a new cost line. High-volume sellers must restructure their inbound pipeline. Sellers shipping from China face added complexity because rework at a US fulfillment center is far costlier than correction at origin.
What This Means for China-Based Sellers
The practical implication is straightforward: you need a third-party prep center operating before the first-leg departure point. Prepping at origin in China delivers three advantages. First, labor costs for labeling, bagging and bundling are significantly lower. Second, defects are caught before international freight is paid on non-compliant units. Third, corrected inventory ships on the planned vessel or flight rather than waiting for rework at a congested US facility.
FulfillDock by SBT provides FBA prep and first-leg services as one of its five core service lines, drawing on 24,000 m² of warehouse space: Suzhou anchors the network with 13,000 m², supplemented by 8,000 m² in Dongguan and 3,000 m² in Shenzhen. With no minimum order quantity and a dedicated English-speaking account manager, the service accommodates both new product launches and established replenishment cycles.
FNSKU vs UPC: A Decision Framework
Choosing the wrong barcode type is one of the most common prep errors. The decision depends on three variables: brand registry status, commingled versus stickerless inventory, and product category.
When FNSKU Is Required
- Brand Registry enrolled: If your brand is registered in Amazon Brand Registry and you sell through FBA, Amazon assigns a unique FNSKU (Fulfillment Network Stock Keeping Unit) to each ASIN. This barcode ties inventory to your specific seller account and prevents commingling with identical products from other sellers. FNSKU labels must be applied to every unit.
- Stickerless commingled opted out: Even without Brand Registry, if you choose to keep inventory separate rather than commingled, Amazon generates an FNSKU for tracking purposes.
- Categories requiring serialization: Certain categories (electronics, supplements, baby products) mandate FNSKU regardless of commingling preference due to safety and authenticity tracking requirements.
When UPC May Suffice
- Unbranded, commingled inventory: If you sell generic products without Brand Registry enrollment and opt into stickerless commingled inventory, Amazon may accept the manufacturer's UPC as the scannable identifier. However, this exposes your inventory to commingling risk — another seller's counterfeit or defective unit could be fulfilled against your listing.
- GTIN exemption granted: Sellers with approved GTIN exemptions can list products without UPCs, but FBA still requires an FNSKU for warehouse tracking. In practice, GTIN exemption applies to listing creation, not to physical prep.
Hypothetical scenario for illustration: A seller launching a private-label kitchen gadget with Brand Registry enrollment should apply FNSKU labels to every unit at the prep center, even if the product packaging already displays a UPC. The FNSKU overrides the UPC at the fulfillment center scanner. Applying both barcodes without covering the UPC can cause scan confusion and receiving delays. Always confirm current labeling requirements in Seller Central before each shipment, as Amazon periodically updates specifications.
Common Rejection Scenarios and Their Consequences
Rejection at an Amazon fulfillment center is not merely an inconvenience — it carries measurable financial and operational costs. Below are four recurring scenarios with estimated impacts and corresponding prevention measures available through a disciplined prep process.
Scenario 1: Incorrect or Missing FNSKU Labels
- What happens: Units arrive without valid FNSKU barcodes or with labels placed over seams, curves or existing barcodes. Amazon cannot identify the product and rejects the shipment or charges unplanned prep fees.
- Estimated impact: Unplanned prep fees per unit plus receiving delay of 3–7 business days. Repeated violations trigger receiving eligibility warnings.
- Prevention: Photo-verified label application at the prep stage. FulfillDock by SBT maintains a mis-pick rate below 0.01% measured per order line, reflecting systematic barcode verification at every touchpoint. Each labeled unit is scanned and photographed before packing.
Scenario 2: Overweight or Oversized Cartons
- What happens: Cartons exceeding Amazon's weight limit (currently 50 lbs, subject to adjustment) or dimension limits are rejected at the dock.
- Estimated impact: Return freight, repacking labor, reshipment cost and 5–10 business day delay. Seasonal inventory may miss the selling window entirely.
- Prevention: Pre-shipment weight and dimension audit against current specifications. Carton configuration planned during prep to stay within limits.
Scenario 3: Missing Suffocation Warnings or Safety Labels
- What happens: Poly-bagged units without suffocation warnings, or child-resistant packaging without certification marks, are flagged during receiving.
- Estimated impact: Units quarantined until compliant labels applied. Daily storage fees accrue. Listing may be temporarily suppressed.
- Prevention: Category-specific prep checklists enforced at packing. Safety label compliance verified before carton sealing.
Scenario 4: Damaged Packaging Upon Arrival
- What happens: Cartons crushed, torn or water-damaged during first-leg transit. Amazon refuses damaged outer packaging even if inner units are intact.
- Estimated impact: Partial or full shipment refusal. Salvage or disposal fees. Potential negative impact on supplier performance scorecard.
- Prevention: Export-grade carton materials rated for international transit. Proper void fill and edge protection. First-leg carrier selection matched to cargo fragility and transit mode. FulfillDock by SBT contracts 50+ shipping channels and selects by destination, weight and delivery timeline to match cargo requirements.
2026 Carton Rule Changes and Label Placement Updates
Amazon periodically revises its inbound packaging specifications. Key changes effective in the 2026 cycle include updated carton label placement requirements (labels must be on the flat surface of the carton, not over edges or tape seams), revised maximum weight thresholds that vary by fulfillment center designation, and expanded requirements for pallet-level labeling when shipping via LTL or FTL. Sellers should review the current FBA inbound requirements page in Seller Central before every shipment creation, as specifications are updated without advance notice.
At the prep center level, these changes translate into updated SOPs for label printing, carton selection and pallet building. A prep provider operating in China must maintain real-time awareness of Amazon's specification revisions and propagate them to floor staff immediately. The alternative — discovering non-compliance after a container has crossed the Pacific — is the most expensive form of quality failure.
Reading a Prep Quote: The Jobs Hiding Behind One Phrase
Two sellers can receive very different invoices from the same FBA prep service, because that phrase covers several separate pieces of work. Naming them is the quickest way to test whether a quote matches what a fulfilment centre will actually accept.
- Amazon FBA prep as an umbrella — the labour that makes a unit eligible for an inbound centre, done before any freight is booked.
- FBA labeling service — applying the scannable unit label, normally the marketplace's own stock identifier rather than the manufacturer barcode, so a receiving scan resolves to your inventory instead of a shared listing.
- FBA compliant labeling — placement and legibility: on the face a scanner reaches, never across a seam or a corner, and never covering a second barcode.
- FBA carton prep — bagging, cushioning, fragility marking and the per-box weight ceiling that keeps one carton travelling as one unit.
- FBA shipment creation — the box-content record raised in the seller console, where mixed-SKU cartons, carton indexes and the inbound address assignment get settled.
- FBA first leg — the movement from a Chinese factory or our own warehouse to an Amazon inbound point, and the stage where an unresolved prep defect stops being a labelling problem and becomes a rejection.
- FBA prep and ship — one account carrying both jobs, which removes the handover at which most disputes originate.
Ask any provider to walk through those items by name. A quote that cannot be read that way is a price, not a scope.
First-Leg Options from China to Amazon Fulfillment Centers
Once inventory is prepped and cartoned to specification, the first leg begins. The choice of transport mode balances speed, cost and shipment size. All transit times below are estimates; delivery windows fluctuate based on carrier availability, seasonal demand patterns, and border processing timelines.
| Mode | Approximate Transit | Best For | Considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Express courier | 3–7 business days | Urgent replenishment, new product launch samples, small cartons under 30 kg | Highest per-unit cost; door-to-door tracking included |
| Air freight (standard) | 7–12 business days | Mid-size replenishment, seasonal ramp-up, shipments 100–500 kg | Balances speed and cost; requires customs clearance at both ends |
| Ocean freight (LCL) | 25–40 business days | Cost-sensitive replenishment, shipments under a full container | Longest transit; consolidation adds handling steps |
| Ocean freight (FCL) | 20–35 business days | Full-container volumes, established products with predictable demand | Lowest per-unit cost; requires sufficient volume to justify |
