Shipping from China to US and Europe: A First-Timer's 2026 Guide
You Just Placed Your First China Order — What Happens Next?
You have confirmed samples, signed a proforma invoice, and your supplier says "goods ready in 15 days." Now comes the opaque part: getting those goods from a Guangdong factory floor to a customer's doorstep in Ohio or Hamburg. This guide assumes no prior logistics knowledge and no existing warehouse in China. By the end, you will understand every decision point between "factory ready" and "delivered," including regulatory shifts that took effect in 2026.
Five Decisions Before Your Goods Move
Shipping from China is a chain of five choices, each constraining the next:
- Where to consolidate. Which city your warehouse sits in determines domestic transit time, port proximity, and which export corridor your goods enter.
- How to declare. China Customs requires an export declaration before goods leave. The declaration type affects tax treatment and documentation speed.
- Which transport mode fits. Express air, dedicated parcel lines, ocean FCL/LCL, air freight, or hybrid sea-air — each has different transit ranges and suitability by product type.
- Who clears import. At destination, someone must file entry documents, pay duties and assume importer-of-record responsibility. This is where DDP services differ from DAP.
- How last-mile reaches the customer. Final delivery depends on whether goods go to an Amazon fulfillment center, a commercial address, a private residence, or your own overseas warehouse.
FulfillDock by SBT operates across all five decision points from its three-warehouse network in China — a 3,000 m² facility in Shenzhen, a 13,000 m² site in Suzhou, and an 8,000 m² location in Dongguan, totaling 24,000 m² — alongside in-market stations in Los Angeles and New York, with in-country clearance staff across German, British and Japanese ports. Established in 2011, the company holds NVOCC filing, international freight-forwarder registration, AAA credit-enterprise status and Shenzhen Air Transport Association membership.
From Factory Floor to Customer Door: A Seven-Node Roadmap
| Node | Action | SBT Intervention Point |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Supplier dispatch | Factory loads goods onto domestic truck | SBT provides nearest receiving hub (20+ hubs across Shenzhen, Dongguan, Zhongshan, Yiwu, Suzhou) |
| 2. Warehouse receiving | Goods inspected, labeled and shelved | Inbound QC, SKU labeling, real-time inventory upload |
| 3. Export declaration | China Customs filing completed | Export documentation prepared and filed under applicable codes |
| 4. Line-haul departure | Goods loaded onto vessel, aircraft or rail | Optimal channel selected from 50+ options by destination, weight and urgency |
| 5. Import clearance | Destination customs release | DE/UK/JP clearance teams handle EU and UK entries; US via LA/NY teams |
| 6. Last-mile handoff | Parcel transferred to local carrier | LA and NY warehouses enable domestic-speed US final delivery |
| 7. Customer delivery | Package arrives at destination | Tracking live same day as dispatch; exception SLA: respond within two hours, resolve within twenty-four hours |
Orders received before the daily 16:00 CST cutoff are picked, packed and dispatched to the carrier that same day. All transit times in this guide are approximate estimates; actual delivery varies by carrier, routing, season (peak roughly August–January), port congestion and customs processing.
Choosing Your China Warehouse: Location Over Size
First-time buyers often select a warehouse by price per square meter. The more consequential factor is geographic fit to your supply base. FulfillDock by SBT operates three warehouses with distinct roles:
- Shenzhen (3,000 m²): Adjacent to Bao'an Airport and Yantian/Shekou ports. Best for consumer electronics, 3C accessories and fast-moving SKUs destined for air freight. Pearl River Delta suppliers deliver within half a day.
- Suzhou (13,000 m²): In the Yangtze River Delta industrial belt. Ideal for East China-sourced machinery components, appliances and textiles. Largest facility, serving as a consolidation hub before cargo moves south to Shenzhen or east to Shanghai port.
- Dongguan (8,000 m²): Specializes in apparel, footwear, home furnishings and bulky items. Optimized for larger carton sizes and garment-on-hanger handling that Shenzhen cannot accommodate efficiently.
If your suppliers span multiple regions, splitting inventory across two warehouses reduces domestic transit and provides redundancy. Your dedicated English-speaking account manager advises on placement. No minimum order quantity applies.
Export Declaration Basics
Every shipment leaving China requires a customs declaration. Four primary codes exist for cross-border ecommerce (9610, 9710, 9810, 1210). You do not need to memorize them — your fulfillment provider should recommend the correct code. What you do need to verify is that your provider holds valid qualifications. FulfillDock by SBT maintains NVOCC filing and MOFCOM freight-forwarder registration for direct filing.
In April 2026, China Customs launched a trade facilitation campaign accelerating clearance for compliant exporters. In June 2026, Ningbo Customs introduced 12 measures for cross-border ecommerce exports, including simplified declarations and priority inspection. Properly documented shipments now clear faster than a year ago.
Channel Selection: Matching Mode to Mission
The right shipping method depends on urgency, volume, product characteristics and destination regulations:
- Speed-critical: International express delivers China-to-US in an estimated 1–3 business days, China-to-Europe in 2–5 days. Suitable for samples and urgent restocks.
- Balanced: Dedicated parcel lines offer estimated 5–10 days to the US, 7–15 days to Europe. Consolidated air routes with pre-cleared lanes for regular ecommerce orders. FulfillDock by SBT operates 50+ channels across 50+ countries.
- Volume-driven: Sea freight DDP to the US West Coast typically 23–30 days door-to-door; Northern Europe 36–48 days. Rail to Europe 13–20 days estimated. Default for planned replenishment and heavy products.
- Middle ground: Hybrid sea-air combines ocean line-haul with air final leg. China-to-US estimated 15–25 days door-to-door. Useful for peak-season restocking when sea alone is too slow but full air exceeds budget.
All transit times are approximate reference ranges measured from the point of line-haul departure. Delivery windows shift with the carrier you select, routing decisions, peak-season capacity constraints, port congestion and customs processing. Every shipment should be quoted individually.
2026 Regulatory Update: Operational Impact
Two regulatory shifts in 2026 directly affect China-to-West shipping. This section covers operational impact only; detailed analysis is in our dedicated articles.
United States: De Minimis Suspension
The US has ended the $800 small-parcel exemption for China-origin goods as of 2026. What this means: every parcel now requires formal customs entry and duties apply regardless of value. Sellers should evaluate consolidating into DDP ocean freight or using a US overseas warehouse to offset added duty. FulfillDock by SBT's LA and NY warehouses support this strategy. For details: see our breakdown of US de minimis changes.
European Union: Flat €3 Per Line Item
Since July 1, 2026, the EU eliminated the €150 duty-free threshold. Until July 2028, qualifying small parcels face a flat €3 per-item charge. IOSS registration remains required. What this means: landed-cost math for sub-€30 products has shifted materially. Consider kitting to reduce per-unit duty impact. For details: our analysis of the EU's €3 line-item charge.
Common First-Timer Mistakes
- Equating transit time with delivery promise. Carrier-advertised transit excludes warehouse processing, customs holds and last-mile variability. Build buffer into customer-facing estimates.
- Ignoring packaging compliance. Destination countries have labeling and safety-marking requirements. Non-compliant packaging triggers customs holds. Verify compliance before first shipment.
- Treating channels as interchangeable. A channel optimized for the US may underperform to Scandinavia. Work with a provider offering 50+ channels for per-order routing.
- Neglecting exception protocols. Ask your provider: what is your response SLA? FulfillDock by SBT commits to respond within two hours and resolve within twenty-four hours on any exception.
- Underestimating the account manager. Cross-border logistics requires judgment calls. A dedicated English-speaking account manager prevents miscommunication and accelerates resolution.
Six Searches, Six Different Problems
Each phrase below is a real question a first shipment has to answer, and each one fails differently when it is guessed at.
- Shipping from China to USA — usually a customs-and-final-mile problem wearing a transport label. The entry filing for low-value goods has been rewritten in this lane, so the freight quote is only half the landed picture.
- Shipping from China to Europe — a two-door problem. Ocean into the North Range with onward road delivery, or air into a hub with a local parcel handover; the duty route, the lead time, and the exceptions you will hear about are not the same.
- China warehouse shipping — the ship-what-from-where question. Stock sitting in a facility that cannot consolidate two supplier batches into one carton will force a split consignment, and split consignments get declared twice.
- China outbound logistics — everything between the factory gate and the vessel or aircraft: export declaration, inspection if flagged, consolidation, container loading, documentation. It is the part of a schedule nobody books and everybody blames for a late sailing.
- Export fulfillment from China — order-level work done before the border: picking individual SKUs, packing to the destination market's labelling rules, and generating one tracking number per parcel instead of per carton.
- China shipping solutions — a bundle: warehousing plus a lane plus clearance plus delivery, priced as a workflow. Useful once volume justifies one accountable party; premature when a single shipment is still the whole operation.
None of these are interchangeable, and none of them is a synonym for the freight leg alone. Writing the requirement in this vocabulary is what turns a quote comparison into a real comparison.
